Introduction

Transmission gas pipeline is an important part of oil and gas industries and the carbon steel is a primary material for construction the pipeline due to its low cost and availability, but it is very susceptible to corrosion in CO2 environments.

Co2 has been one of the major problems in the oil industry since 1940. Recently, it has again come to the fore because of the technique of CO2 injection for enhanced oil recovery and exploitation of deep natural gas reservoirs containing carbon dioxide. The presence of carbon dioxide can cause the increasing of percentages for impurities and cause severe corrosion problems in oil and gas pipelines. Internal corrosion in wells and pipelines is influenced by temperature, CO2 and H2S content, water chemistry, flow velocity, oil or water wetting and composition and surface condition of the steel. Unprotected pipelines, whether buried in the ground, exposed to the atmosphere, or submerged in water, are susceptible to corrosion. Without proper maintenance, every pipeline system will eventually deteriorate.
